SKETCH EXPLORATION
Exploring concepts focused on simplifying coffee preparation through clearer workflows, sensory-aware interactions, and intuitive organisation systems. Early ideas investigated how physical form, visual guidance, and interaction design could reduce cognitive load and improve confidence during preparation tasks.
A modular cup-positioning system using illuminated coasters and colour feedback to guide users through drink preperation stages. The concept focused on reducing memory reliance and improving workflow visibility.

A wearable clip-on device that provides subtle vibration feedback to support task tracking and reduce reliance on memory during busy café workflows.
A magnetic tracking system with moveable markers that helps users visually monitor progress through preparation and workplace tasks.

A colour and texture-coded workstation tray designed to organise tools and ingredients, reducing cognitive load and improving preparation consistency.
A discreet clip-on wearable that provides subtle haptic feedback and reminders, helping users stay on track with tasks and reducing on memory during busy café environments.
A visual organisation system that helps baristas keep their workspace tidy and consistent, the lights show where each items belong.

A cup and lid dispenser system that allows quicker more efficient coffee making rather than users dealing with sticky lids and cups as this was a issue encountered by the site visits.

A cup and lid dispenser system that allows quicker more efficient coffee making rather than users dealing with sticky lids and cups as this was a issue encountered by the site visits. This is combined with the first concept of having the coffee step helper system.

Universal lid that suggests amount of liquid to pour

Gloves that are insulating (for burns), waterproof, heating (for arthritis) and have a structured frame for people with motor function difficulties.

Multipurpose pullout draw: accessible storage space, stool for shorter staff

Device that transfers drinks from big cartons to small bottles without having to pour them out

To identify the most suitable direction for development, each concept was evaluated against the key user needs established through research, interviews, and workflow analysis. Concept were scored based on their ability to improve workflow clarity, provide visual guidance, reduce cognitive load, support independence, enhance organisation, and integrate effectively within the café environments.
The evaluation highlighted Cup Cue as the strongest overall concept, achieving highest score due to it’s ability to address multiple user needs within a single integrated system. This evidence-based assessment informed the selection of the final concept taken forward into prototyping and development.
